What Is the Right Security Strategy in Today’s Internet Environment?

hohensalzburg-fortress-117297_1920Network security has always been of the utmost importance. But, over the past several years, security concerns have steadily ramped up, and with good reason.

2016 was the year of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. The Internet experienced an unprecedented onslaught of these types of attacks, sending IT departments worldwide into high alert and causing them to close their metaphorical draw bridges and ready their digital cannons to defend against any potential security breaches.

In fact, security trends are shifting to adapt to the risks of the moment. Gartner recently reported that enterprises are transforming their security spending strategies with a greater focus on detection and response security measures. Worldwide spending on information security is expected to reach $90 billion in 2017, an increase of 7.6 percent over 2016, and will top $113 billion by 2020. Spending on enhancing detection and response capabilities is expected to be a key priority for security buyers through 2020.[1]

Sid Deshpande, principal research analyst at Gartner commented, “While this does not mean that prevention is unimportant or that chief information security officers (CISOs) are giving up on preventing security incidents, it sends a clear message that prevention is futile unless it is tied into a detection and response capability.”
