It may seem like the cybersecurity message is everywhere, but the importance of keeping your company’s data safe cannot be understated — and unfortunately, many organizations are still vulnerable. It’s also true that developing and maintaining a comprehensive security plan is costly and time-consuming, but it’s worth every dollar and hour spent.
Do you remember the WannaCry ransomware attack? The name is enough to make IT professionals around the world shudder. Between May 12-15, 2017, the cyberattack infected an estimated 200,000 computers in about 150 countries. By the time the attack came to a halt, its effect and scope was already unprecedented. Just a few months later, hackers infiltrated HBO’s computer systems and accessed hours and hours of popular shows, as well as sensitive data and internal documents. That’s not to mention Shadow Brokers’ April release of alleged NSA tools, WikiLeaks’ March release of nearly 9,000 alleged stolen CIA documents and other cybersecurity disasters this year.
Lloyd’s of London, the world’s oldest insurance market, recently released a 56-page report that stated a large-scale cyberattack could cost the global economy more than $120 billion, which was the cost of cleaning up Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy.
Though the large-scale, global scams make headlines, all businesses are at risk. Symantec’s 2017 Internet Security Threat Report explained that, in 2016, “one in 131 emails contained malware, the highest rate in five years.” Business Email Compromise (BEC) fraud targeted more than 400 businesses each day, causing $3 billion in damage over three years. Ransomware attacks have also increased dramatically, with a 36 percent rise globally. For smaller businesses, cyberattacks can be fatal; 43 percent of these scams target small companies, while 60 percent of those businesses shutter within six months of such an attack.
When it comes to security, having multiple layers is the most important defense. Also, organizations must understand that no matter how much money they spend, there’s no such thing as impenetrable security, so risk mitigation is imperative. And lastly, businesses need to stay updated on constantly evolving security tools and practices.
